I'm sorry to say I'm disappointed in Doug's choice in buying a Skyline.

They're not particularly uncommon in Canada, and even less so in BC, and are one of the most "boring" looking of the crazy Asian sports cars of the 90s...

Just think of the possibilities, Doug "CarMaxWarranty" DeMuro trying to deal with the issues of a twin turbo RX-7?!?! Or he could have had the gorgeous curves of a Mark IV Supra or fifth gen Celica GT-4... or he could have gone all out and imported a Toyota Celica GT-R with AWD and four wheel steering!!! Lest I forget the dead brands, he could have had a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4.... :(

I'm sorry Doug, and I'll be delighted to read about your shenanigans, but your choice of car is getting a resounding "meh, eh?" from this Canadian.

Totally understand. Keep in mind there was a Ferrari before this, a Cadillac before that, and a second car still on the way. And in six months, something new!!!

Skyline GT-R is a big deal to Americans and ultimately that's a huge percentage of my audience. But for people who aren't into the Skyline, or Japanese cars in general, I swear I have other tricks up my sleeve!

I fully understand why you're buying a GT-R, and I'm rather looking forward to reading about how smoothly the importing process goes, best of luck! I'll bet there's going to be an article specifically devoted to converstations with people wondering how you managed to get one into the US.

Also, can I propose a RHD Nissan Cube? Please?

Maybe the other one will be an Edsel. Cutting edge Japanese to defunct American. It'd be a great contrast.

Hey now, Mitsubishi is only mostly dead.

Kinja'd!!!

There is still time for him to pick up a ruined VR4 for comparison though:

Yes, there is a second car in the works, right? I am anxious to see what it is.

I've been angsting over what to purchase as my 2nd fun car now that I'm in Europe and have had some interesting ideas pop up. I'm hampered by the costs of car registration, though. Some vehicles would cost more to register than to purchase due to carbon taxes, etc. It's truly sticker shock compared to the USA.

Doug, you had originally mentioned in your post that your budget was $50k-$60k. As we all know, you went over budget with the Ferrari. So let's say your max cap was in the range of $75k. Does that mean we can expect the second vehicle to cost upwards of $50k?

The Autozam AZ-1 and Honda Beat are still too young for the US, so it can't be those. Fingers crossed for something crazy, like a BMW Isetta.

Not that I am biased or anything, but I believe the Skyline is a better choice than most other Japanese cars he could import; here's why. For people who aren't into Japanese cars the Skyline is at least recognizable, and to import junkies (like myself) it is one of the most desirable cars ever made. Admittedly, there are plenty of JDM rides I'd rather import myself (a Mark IV Toyota Chaser for example).

However, I think doing the import thing makes more sense with one of the most iconic Japanese cars ever made, particularly for its rarity and desirability stateside. All of the cars you suggested in your original post are actually available in the US, in one form or another, and don't really offer as much of a rarity factor. Now if he were to import a Pulsar GTi-R that would be a different story. Of course, with that car he would at some point drop through the giant rust spot in the floor and get road rash an that lily white booty of his; which would make sitting down to write more articles rather difficult.

And look at it this way, if/when the GT-R doesn't live up to the hype, Doug can write about how it's not all its cracked up to be and why we glorify these cars that aren't really anything special. Perhaps that could help some enthusiasts who is counting the days down to import the car of his dream realize that maybe he should import a different, more unique, JDM jewel.

I am very much looking forward to this series of articles, more so for the documentation of the import process; seeing as I'm not very far from Canada, and would love to bring an Evo IV/V, Toyota Chaser, Forester STI, or Trueno AE86. I still do love the R32 GT-R as well; next to the Hakosuka it's my favorite Skyline.

I actually missed your 'for real' announcment. Only saw the foolery that was the Malibu claim.

I am so pleased you chose a GTR. I posted about three times in support of it. I think your style and personality will produce great stuff with this platform. You will have a distinctly different approach to writing for the car than those who have before. Mainly becuase you aren't Japanese, Paul Walker, or on a Touge.

As a Canadian who has driven several Skyline's. I think you will enjoy driving one. That being said there are a few things to be aware of. Be careful making left hand turns because if you get t-boned it will be on the driver's side. Watch out for that tricky four wheel steering (common issues there). Understand that the engine likes to eat turbo's. People will annoy you more than when you drove your Ferrari. Most of all for some reason every imported Skyline I have driven smells really strange. I hope that's not what Japan smells like :P. I am looking forward to reading what you think about the car. Good luck from all us Canadians!

My roommate does car importing, and when we saw you got an R32 he was like "Dang it, he could've maybe bought it from me."

Is the other car going to be that Lancia Thema with the Ferrari engine?
